Billy Elliot
Based on the groundbreaking 2000 film starring Jamie Bell, this glorified musical adaptation highlights the trails and triumphs of a young boy’s road to success. The £5.5 million project premiered at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London’s West End in the midst of 2005 and has since been performed in Australia and The States. Billy Elliot Boasts a gratifying honour of awards including four Laurence Olivier Awards in one night and the 2005 Theatre Goers’ Choice Award.
The tale is set in a 1984 northern England mining town where work and money opportunities are scarce and miners are on strike, making life there unbearable. However, one young boy, Billy Elliot is agitated by the brutal boxing lessons at school whilst his brother and father participate in the strike. Billy lacks both moral and parental support with his mother’s passing a while back and his grandmother not understanding what’s happening. Instead of the vicious boxing classes, Billy takes up ballet lessons at school which he is being fully supported with thanks to his teacher yet when his folks find out it won’t be all good news.
A young boy’s quest for pride and happiness entwined with 16 melodic numbers best sums up Billy Elliot the Musical. With sensational music from Sir Elton John and stunning lyrics courtesy of Lee Hall, this feel-good, heart-warming celebration of a youths’ battle with triumph over adversity is truly unmissable
